Members of the Asphalt Materials, Heritage Construction & Materials and Heritage Research Labs teams will be attending this year’s AEMA-ARRA-ISSA  Annual Meeting.

Recycling, sustainability and the circular economy are all important topics that businesses and industries are engaged with.

With today’s infrastructure, reuse of valuable existing resources is a critical component in a pavement manager’s arsenal. According to research, the advanced technologies used in recycling and reclamation processes can provide major benefits such as: significant cost savings, lowered environmental impact, and precision engineering for stronger, safer, more sustainable roads.

It is important to remember that, existing asphalt pavements contain the raw materials for new roads. Rarely replaced, asphalt pavements are either repaired or recycled.

Cold-in-Place Recycling (CIR) is a cost effective and sustainable method of constructing a recycled asphalt-bound layer that reduces trucking and construction time, while also saving natural resources. The process removes cracks and other pavement distresses. CIR is a rehabilitation technique where pavement is milled, crushed, and mixed in place (on-site) with a stabilizing emulsion or foamed asphalt and then placed with conventional paving equipment.

With the help of experts like those that reside within The Heritage Research Group, roads should be evaluated beforehand as being suitable for the CIR process.

About AEMA – ARRA – ISSA

Coming together collectively for the 20th consecutive year, the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA), the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA), and the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) are hosting the 2023 AEMA-ARRA-ISSA Annual Meeting in Litchfield Park, AZ.

With the future of our industry at the forefront during this Annual Meeting, attendees will hear from industry experts on how they can lead their teams into the future. Innovative topics will provide opportunities for members to improve their business, keep abreast of best practices, and connect with colleagues in the industry.

ARRA will also be recognizing award winners during the Annual Meeting.

Morgan County CIR Project – August 2022

In August of 2022, a project took place in Martinsville, IN with our Cold-In-Place Recycling (CIR) technology. CIR is a cost-effective and sustainable method of constructing a recycled asphalt-bound layer that reduces trucking and construction time and saves natural resources.

CIR is part of our AMICYCLE™ product portfolio, which also includes FDR (Full Depth Reclamation) and CCPR (Cold Central Plant Recycling).

Four and half miles of Old State Road 37 was rehabilitated using Cold-in-Place Recycling, topped with 1.5 inches of HMA overlay. Sales and support teams from Asphalt Materials, Inc, experts from Heritage Research Group and road crews from Milestone Contractors worked together to bring this sustainable project to life. This collaboration and technology brought residents of Morgan County a rehabilitated road with a short timeline, minimal traffic impacts, and cost savings to taxpayers.

“To be able to have a wide variety of visitors out to our project, brings us a lot of pride.”

More About CIR

Unlike Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR), CIR repairs and recombines pavement materials without removing them from the project site, hence the term, in-place. Or you could also say it is ‘on-site.’

This process is designed to only treat distresses that are present in the top few inches of the existing pavement, allowing agencies to leave sound, structural pavement intact below.

The specialized piece of equipment, a Cold In-Place recycler, creates the recycled mixture, mixing the crushed RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Product) with engineered emulsion at the target emulsion content to ensure the mix design requirements are met. Quality testing is used to monitor material properties throughout construction. Once the CIR mixture is produced, it is transferred via windrow or conveyer belt to a conventional asphalt paver. The material is then compacted using conventional pavement compaction equipment, resulting in a fully coated and structurally sound pavement.
