Meet Nick Williams, Logistics Coordinator at Asphalt Materials, Inc.! Nick’s role centers around coordinating rail car movements across several key locations that enable the safe transport of our materials.

In 2021, Nick started at Asphalt Materials with a background in Supply Chain and Operations Management from the University of Indianapolis. He has since brought his strategic mindset and passion for problem-solving to the logistics team.

Originally from Rensselaer, IN, Nick’s journey into logistics began with an internship at the Indiana Department of Administration. From there, he worked in customer sales and account management for a dry van brokerage company, managing a large portfolio of clients. His desire to move from the carrier side to the shipper side led him to AMI, where he was excited to dive into something a little different.

“I was familiar with The Heritage Group and AMI through previous career searches, and I liked the idea of doing something different,” Nick shares. “Liquid shipments offered a new layer of complexity and opportunity.”

In his role, Nick works to reduce demurrage costs, manage leased rail fleets and ensure timely inbound material shipments from refineries. His responsibilities also include strategic planning, compliance and evaluating supply chain efficiency.

“No two days are the same,” Nick says. “I enjoy the challenge of creating plans that work for both AMI and our refinery partners. It’s all about finding the best balance.”

“Nick’s ability to manage complex logistics situations makes him an incredible addition to the Supply & Logistics team,” says Todd Hillard, Senior Purchasing Manager. “Coordinating successful deliveries of our materials involves a lot of moving parts, and I can always rely on him to keep supplier communications on track and stay organized.”

Nick collaborates daily with logistics leads, supply purchasers and plant managers to coordinate pickups and deliveries while managing shipping schedules. He also works closely with finance and accounting teams and maintains relationships with carriers to ensure smooth operations.

One of his standout contributions was leading the initiative to install dash cameras in AMI’s truck fleet. He’s also spearheaded a material research project that aligns forecasts with inventory data, diving deeper into supply chain analytics and decision-making.

“Nick’s attention to detail and proactive problem-solving makes him an invaluable asset to our team. Whether he’s optimizing freight routes or anticipating demand fluctuations, Nick brings precision and dedication to every challenge.” – Tyler Trent, Logistics Director

Nick appreciates the collaborative culture at AMI. “It’s refreshing to work somewhere where the company truly cares,” he says. “You can see the impact of your work, and it’s a great collaborative environment.”

He’s also been involved in Lean Six Sigma projects that advance targeted opportunities to improve operational efficiencies.

Outside of work, Nick is an avid reader of all genres and lives in the Indianapolis area with his wife. If he weren’t in logistics, he imagines he’d do something involving writing, something he enjoys as a creative exercise.

In the coming year, Nick is excited to continue exploring supply chain analytics to make more informed decisions around purchasing and transportation. His advice for newcomers? “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s better to ask than assume, and AMI is the kind of place where people will take the time to help you learn.”

Nick’s willingness to tackle complex challenges makes him an invaluable part of our team. His innovative approach and collaborative spirit help keep AMI moving forward every day. We’re proud to have Nick on board and look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work!
