Asphalt Materials, Inc. (AMI) solves customer problems by identifying the goals and parameters of their project and developing a solution to fit their needs. We are excited to tackle our industry’s biggest challenges with new and inventive solutions that will mean better, safer and longer-lasting and sustainable roads.
Champaign County, Ohio, is home to many horticulture and agriculture industries as well as a large Amish community. The quality and condition of the roadways plays a huge factor in day-to-day operations for these organizations and residents. To keep these county roads running smoothly, the county was searching for a product that was of high quality to withstand heavy equipment, environmentally friendly and cost effective. AMI suggested AMIBIND™ Cold Constructed Asphalt Pavement (CCAP), for this project.
CCAP is a chemically modified asphalt product that produces an improved form of cold mix asphalt. This multigrade asphalt product sits under our AMIBIND product category, which consists of mix applications including modified and unmodified asphalt, as well as CCAP.
This product is a gel, it creates a thicker film coating on the aggregate and allows the material to not strip and to stay in place. CCAP will not drain into or run off the pavement and helps extend its ageing process.
Additionally, stone does not need to be pre-heated for the CCAP to coat the aggregate. It is a very flexible product, resistant to cracking and durable under many types of vehicles. This cold mix can be stockpiled and placed in a paver for road repairs such as patching potholes or adding a new layer to low-volume roads, and a chip seal is often placed over the cold mix.
Benefits to using CCAP for road repairs:
- Remains flexible through cold weather, guarding against cracks and potholes.
- Maintains durability in the heat of summer, resisting any flushing or tracking.
- Can be stockpiled for extended periods of time.
- CCAP construction is relatively easy for local crews to lay and maintain using standard asphalt paving equipment.
Key members of the AMI team presented Champaign County, Ohio with more economical and sustainable approaches such as CCAP to improve their roads’ durability over time. AMI’s core strength is its formulation, manufacturing and research and development of asphalt binders and emulsions that enables AMI to supply high-quality products and services to customers such as Champaign County.
